Expense
Expenses are what the business spends to operate: rent, wages, supplies, electricity. They grow on the debit side and, over a period, are subtracted from income in the income statement. Buying something that lasts, like a machine, is not an expense but an asset. Example: paying 400 of rent debits Rent expense 400.
